i thik its assumed they have analyzed the seat for fibers and what not before they sit down. they usually show that part if its imprortant to the story (like they find a fiber or blood or some other substance that turns out to be a clue) but there is no sense in showing that part if they find nothing.. usually, so they skip to the part where they DO find a relevant clue. also, they will often show like a time lapse of them just jumping around the car in various places looking for clues.
if you are talking about CSI Miami, then yes, they do seem very police-like. but in the original CSI, there is a distinct difference between cops and CSIs, some CSIs just cary guns since, after all, they are analyzing a fresh crime scene, and suspects often return to the scene of the crime.

I like how they make the CSIs seem like they're cops. It's Forensic Files meets LAw & Order - the smarts.
